Situated between the National Parks of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Green Barn Cottages are located in the Howgills, on the outskirts of the attractive village of Ravenstonedale. Although lost in the countryside, we’re a mere fifteen minutes’ drive from the M6 at Tebay.
Surrounded by farmland and fells, the location is ideal for walking or touring, cycling, sightseeing or simply relaxing in beautiful and peaceful surroundings and enjoying the views out to Wild Boar Fell, Mallerstang Edge, Ash Fell and beyond. Our entrance leads straight out onto the fell, where you can have a gentle stroll along the side of Artlegarth Beck, or across Paradise (it really is called that!), or perhaps the start of a more serious day’s walking.

Other interests are catered for locally with a golf course in Ravenstonedale, and a further one at Kirkby Stephen, tennis in the village and trout fishing either on still water at Bessy Beck Fishery, or on the River Eden for which day tickets are readily available.

It’s a mile to the facilities in the village, where you’ll find two pubs both serving good food, and a small shop for the morning paper and essentials, while the market town of Kirkby Stephen is only six miles away. Kendal, Penrith and Sedbergh are all within easy reach, and you can travel on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway from the station at Kirkby Stephen.

There’s an abundance of bird life, and you may well spot buzzards and curlews along with the more common species. Red Squirrels, virtually non-existent in most parts of the country, are regular visitors to our grounds. Although shy, our Reds are easy to watch and photograph as they take the hazelnuts from the boxes we leave out, either sitting and eating them or scurrying off to bury and return for more. The local Fell Ponies are usually close by, sheep graze the adjoining land, and the antics of the Spring lambs are great fun to see!

Standing in the grounds of The Green, a Victorian farmhouse, our beautiful stone barn has been sympathetically converted by local craftsmen into three luxury cottages, each completely self-contained. All the cottages are very well insulated and have underfloor heating supplied by a ground source heat pump, along with a wood-burning stove in the comfortable lounge for an extra cosy touch. The bedrooms all have comfortable king-size beds which can be arranged as two singles if required, and bathrooms have good showers and whirlpool baths.

Within your cottage there’s a washing machine and tumble dryer, and you’ll find the fully fitted kitchens well equipped, including a slow-cooker crockpot if you want to come back from a day out to a welcoming casserole, and a dishwasher so that you don’t have to wash up on your holiday. Cumbria is justifiably proud of its local produce, and you’ll find plenty of good ingredients at local shops and farmers’ markets.
Additional facilities for disabled guests are available in The Carthouse.

Sorry – no children under twelve, and no pets, in the Byre and The Haystore. Guests staying in the Carthouse may bring well-behaved children over the age of five, but please be aware that there are no facilities specifically designed for young children, and we do ask parents to ensure children aren’t a nuisance to other guests.

We welcome well-trained dogs which can be accommodated in The Carthouse.
